Their trip included a number of remarkable visits to the most important institutions in relation to global cooperation in the world.

From intellectual property in the South Centre to dealing with the situation of refugees at UNHCR, it was two intense days full of insights. The open discussions about the current challenges of the MGG countries in UNCTAD and WTO were an invitation to reflect about the future the participants want for their countries.Photo: Members of MGG Academy at European Commission in Brussels

During the stay in Brussels, the participants visited the European Commission to discuss a wide array of topics related to the European contribution to global cooperation and governance. One of the highlights of the trip was the insightful speech given by the Director of the Cities Alliance, William Cobbett. This opened new perspectives about how slums could be transformed into livable neighbourhoods.

On 25 August 2019, the MGG-Academy participants from seven countries around the world got a taste of Roman history and the rare and delicious red wine of the Ahr Valley. They were welcomed by Livia Octavia, otherwise known as Rita Klüwer at the Römervilla for a walk through Roman times. Her lively narratives elaborated not only about the architecture, economic and political heritage of the Romans, but also shed light on their everyday lives and culture.

After the enriching dip into the local history, the group hiked along the gorgeous manicured vineyards that are home to the rarely grown red-wine in Germany, Pinot Noir. They learnt about the rich history of the local farmers, family-owned farms and the struggles of the local community to preserve the ancient history of the region. Over a picnic style lunch, the MGG- group bonded over wine, cheese, pretzels and of course rich and intense discussions about political economies of their home countries.

Then they visited a local winery that used to be a monastery in the older times. The stories of the ancient nuns using the wine cellar, steeped in a history was as rich as the red wine brewed in the wooden barrels in the cellars. They topped off the day with ice-cream and some fond memories of the trail. The trip was a perfect opportunity to make stronger bonds with their fellow MGG participants – after all, nothing allows you to make better friends than bonding over beautiful sights and catching your breath over the mesmerising view of the valley below.

This year’s course will run until December 12, 2019. In a video, we have put together some impressions of participants.

Every two years the “AKLHÜ e.V. – Netzwerk und Fachstelle für internationale personelle Zusammenarbeit” hosts a job and trade fair with more than fifty exhibitors from the international development sector, accompanied by interesting talks and presentations. At this year’s fair on 12 October at the Stadthalle in Siegburg, DIE’s Martin Koch (Communications Department) and Regine Mehl (Head of Postgraduate Training Programme) represented the institute and answered the question of the many hundreds of visitors.

The focus of the fairs attendees interest was the Postgraduate Training Programme, which prepares recent university graduates with a masters degree for a career in bilateral development cooperation. Throughout the day, the fair also included keynotes and panel discussion, that dealt with the current developments on the job market as well as with opportunities for advanced trainings. Authentic first hand experiences of working in the development field were also part of the presentations. Among others, Regine Mehl discussed the current trends in the development sector with visitors and other exhibitors during a panel discussion.

On 2th September we, the 55th year of the postgraduate programme, started at DIE and we would like to thank all employees for their friendly welcome. During the next nine months we hope to learn a lot about development in terms of the SDGs and to get an insight into research practice during our projects in Ethiopia, Botswana and Namibia, as well as Jordan. Of course, there should not be a shortage of fun which is why we took a day trip to the Ahrtal together with our programme coordinator Regine Mehl and the coordinators of our research teams.

Rita Klüwer welcomed us at the Römervilla where she gave us an informative and authentic tour through the ruins and the surrounding vineyards. Among other things, we learned that the local winegrowers successfully refuse to grow white wine and that 80 percent of the wine grown in the region is Spätburgunder. Subsequently, we got a chance to taste some of the latter and, during a hike and a lunch, we had the opportunity to get to know each other better and to exchange some ideas concerning the following nine months at the institute.

Moreover, the day served to make plans for the upcoming time and to talk to the team and course coordinators in an informal atmosphere outside the institute. We are all looking forward to getting to know as many of the employees as possible and to engage in conversations at one of the future events, gladly over a glass of Spätburgunder.

On 25-26 July, the Managing Global Governance (MGG) network organised together with the Mexican Agency for International Cooperation and Development (AMEXCID) and the research organisation Instituto Mora the conference „The Power of Cooperation: Shaping a positive narrative of global governance“. It took place at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mexico City.

Alumni of all years of the MGG Academy, – the training and dialogue format of the MGG network – partners from the MGG network, and guests from politics, academia, civil society, and the private sector discussed how to hold open spaces for dialogue in times of increasing polarisation and nationalist tendencies. The discussions focused on the direct exchange between all stakeholders, the agreement on problems and possible solutions and the work in multi-sectoral networks in the fields of migration and international development cooperation.

The conference was part of a series of events in all MGG partner countries (Brazil, China, India, Indonesia, Mexico, South Africa) to examine positive narratives of global governance. The conference in Mexico built on the discussions in India (28 – 29 April 2019) and its results will feed into the follow-up event in Brazil (18 – 20 September 2019).

The great interest in the discussion is documented by related media coverage.
