    Das deutsche System der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (EZ) ist im internationalen Vergleich in vielerlei Hinsicht besonders, wenn nicht gar einzigartig. Neben seiner beinahe weltweiten Präsenz und seiner institutionellen Besonderheiten – mit einem eigenen Ministerium für wirtschaftliche Zusammenarbeit und Entwicklung, zwei großen staatlichen Durchführungsorganisationen, politischen Stiftungen und einer Vielzahl von kirchlichen und anderen Nicht-Regierungsorganisationen – zeichnet sich das deutsche EZ-System insbesondere auch durch seine Instrumentenvielfalt aus.

    A growing number of policymakers, researchers and funding bodies have gotten excited about transformative research on Africa. Transformative research, they claim, may support progress towards economic, social and environmental sustainability in Africa and may enhance the participation of local actors in development research and cooperation. This may happen, if we actually knew what transformative research meant and how best to go about it.

    With Hamburg G20 Summit drawing closer, so too does the handover of the G20 presidency to the 2018 host, Argentina. In this blog, Jorge Argüello, Chair of the Embajada Abierta Foundation and former Ambassador of Argentina to the UN, explores possible areas around which the Latin American members of the G20 (Argentina, Brazil, Mexico) could work together to ensure Latin American perspectives and priorities are elevated and more effectively represented within the G20 process.

  • Entwicklung? Ja, aber sicher! Entwicklungspolitik und Sicherheit vernetzt denken

    Frank-Walter Steinmeier sagte im Februar 2016: „Der Zustand dieser Welt ist in der Tat nicht gut. Oder mit anderen Worten – die Welt ist aus den Fugen. […] Aber es ist nicht nur die Zahl der Konflikte, die beunruhigend ist, sondern die ungeheure Dynamik, mit der sie sich im Augenblick entwickeln.“ Dem voran ging Bundespräsident Gaucks Forderung auf der Münchener Sicherheitskonferenz im Januar 2014, dass Deutschland mehr Verantwortung in der Welt übernehmen müsse. Der andauernde Krieg in Syrien, zum Teil menschengemachte Hungersnöte, Verarmung, Extremismus und Migration sind Herausforderungen, die unseres stärkeren Engagements bedürfen.

  • Turning the global inequality debate into action

    Although G20 finance ministers in Baden Baden acknowledged the growing challenge of inequality, and the need for more inclusive growth, it is not yet clear what action the G20 leaders might take on the subject at their meeting in Hamburg. As evidence mounts about the risks posed by inequality to both social and economic advancement, this blog considers the merits of a PISA style ranking for inequality that would help processes like the G20 keep track of which policies and countries are succeeding in tackling inequality. The authors also outline specific recommendations for G20 leaders that could enable the G20 members to periodically review and reassess their approaches to redressing inequality.
