One of the most important initiatives during Germany’s presidency of the G20 in the year 2017 has been that of launching a special partnership with African countries. While the G20 is more inclusive than the G7, countries from the Global South do not necessarily have the same influence as developed countries in the Global North. In this regard, Germany’s step to initiate a Partnership with Africa has been very much welcomed by the Mexican government.

Wann, wenn nicht jetzt? Die Fans einer zukunftsfähigen Entwicklungspolitik in Deutschland haben die einzigartige Chance, im Zuge der Nachhaltigen Entwicklungsziele die Welt umzukrempeln. Wer die mit diesen Zielen verknüpfte Agenda 2030 ernst nimmt, wird sich an die Lösung der globalen Probleme machen und gleichzeitig die Strukturen in Deutschland verändern, die mit zur Herausbildung geopolitischer Konflikte, zu Terrorismus, Flüchtlingsbewegungen, Artenverlust und Klimawandel beitragen.
In Tanzania, the national planning horizon coincided with the start of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In order to facilitate the implementation of SDGs in Tanzania, the Economic and Social Research Foundation (ESRF) and the Ministry of Finance coordinated a brainstorming process to discuss requirements for a succesful implementation, like the involvement of local actors, mobilization of funding and investments in capacities for monitoring and evaluation. In a potentially ominous sign for this year’s G20 Summit, pieces from Wagner’s Götterdämmerung were played to a sold-out audience in the Elbphilarmonie (Hamburg’s new concert hall, which is also the venue for the G20 Summit starting July 7). Translated into English as ‘the Twilight of the Gods’, the opera is the final episode in the lengthy ring-cycle saga which looks at the rise and fall of rule by the supreme powers, and how infighting among the gods in Valhalla is the cause of their ultimate destruction. Were it not five hours in duration, Angela Merkel could do worse than reminding G20 leaders of the themes Wagner’s opera addresses ahead of their two days of meetings.
Lassen wir uns durch die Rekordwerte des BMZ-Etats und die steigende ODA-Quote Deutschlands nicht in die Irre führen: die deutsche Entwicklungspolitik erlebt derzeit einen Rückschlag nach dem anderen. Nicht nur wird die Entwicklungszusammenarbeit (EZ) vor den Karren der menschenverachtenden Flucht- und Migrationsabwehr gespannt. Ebenso besorgniserregend ist, dass es zunehmend zu einer Neudefinition der Entwicklungspolitik kommt.
