As part of this year’s Katholikentag, the German Catholic Convention taking place every two years over five days with this year over 700 events and workshops, Prof. Anna-Katharina Hornidge was invited as a panel speaker together with Minister Reem Alabali Radovan and Dr Andreas Frick, Managing Director of Misereor and moderator Daniela Ordowski to discuss current challenges in international cooperation for sustainable development. Within the unique setting of the Neubaukirche in Würzburg and with a large and engaged audience, they outlined the reasons societies such as Germany invest in international cooperation and sustainable development: The world’s biggest challenges and risks, from climate change and biodiversity loss to social and economic polarisation and political autocratisation as well as digitalisation and AI security risks, can only be addressed jointly.

All countries but middle powers like Germany in particular depend on trusted, reliable partnerships and alliances in a world in which the rule-based order is under immense threat. The panel also highlighted the importance of independent research, civil society, and the public at large: Whilst polarisation and populist campaigns increasingly tend to spread scepticism about development cooperation, research in fact shows widespread public support for the goals of sustainable development and international cooperation. Such societal support needs to be mobilised for Germany to uphold a commitment to 0.7% of GNI spending on development cooperation, necessary to invest in sustainable futures for all.
