Environmental and climate policy should be understood as security policy. International cooperation is not optional; it is essential for safeguarding our shared futures.

The German Advisory Council on Global Change (WBGU), jointly chaired by IDOS Director Prof. Anna-Katharina Hornidge and Prof. Jörg Drewes (TU München), has published the Situation Report “Security – sustainable and integrated”, calling for an integrated operationalisation of a wide conception of security, addressing the multidimensional riskscapes societies are facing. The report was presented to Parliamentary State Secretary Rita Schwarzelühr-Sutter at the Federal Ministry for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.

The advisory council identifies five key areas of particular importance to an integrated security policy beyond military defense capability and civil defence: protection from climate change, biodiversity loss and pollution preserving our viability, social cohesion promoting robust and resilient societies, information integrity forming the basis for a resilient democracy, balanced use of technologies and raw materials reducing our dependencies, and strategic, rules-based, fair collaborations strengthening international cooperation.

During a writing retreat in April, the WBGU prepared the publication of the first part of its upcoming Flagship Report on sustainable and integrated security, which will be published in the coming months
