The Federal Ministry BMFTR funds joint IDOS–FU Berlin project on China’s international role.

IDOS is expanding its research on the international role of the People’s Republic of China. Funded by the German Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR), Dr Sebastian Haug – together with Prof. Sabrina Habich-Sobiegalla from Freie Universität Berlin – will lead the project „China’s Attractiveness in the Global South (CAGS).“
The project focuses on how China incorporates its own domestic development experiences – often referred to as „Chinese Solutions“ – into its international development cooperation. It also examines how strategically relevant partner countries perceive and evaluate the transfer of these experiences and their cooperation with China.
In addition to developing a database, the project will conduct fieldwork in Brazil, Indonesia, and South Africa. Building on an interdisciplinary approach that combines Sinology (Habich-Sobiegalla) and political science (Haug), CAGS also emphasizes knowledge transfer to share research findings with policymakers and the wider public, including younger generations. The BMFTR is funding the project with a total of €500,000 for a period of three years.
