On 1 October, the Lead Theme Day on Globalisaion & Integration took place at the North Rhine-Westphalian Academy of Sciences, Humanities and the Arts. As co-head of this lead theme, Prof. Anna-Katharina Hornidge held the keynote of the day.

The Johannes Rau Research Foundation regularly hosts events on its lead themes to bring scientific perspectives into current societal debates and showcase the work of JRF institutes. At the centre of this event were questions such as whether we are witnessing a turning point in migration policy, how humanitarian standards can be upheld against right wing populism and how we can shape migration and living together in and for the future. In her keynote, Prof. Anna-Katharina Hornidge emphasised the importance of not accepting current upheavals as inevitable, but rather learning together with partner countries from
different regional and political contexts.

This message was further elaborated by IDOS researcher Dr Jana Kuhnt in her talk on “Turbulent Times in Migration Policy: Perspectives from the Global South”, highlighting the global interconnectedness of displacement and migration, which becomes evident particularly in current times of more restrictive migration policy and large aid cuts.
