On 10–11 October, the Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies and the Global Governance Programme at the European University Institute (EUI) in Florence hosted the World Trade Forum 2025 under the theme “Coping with Chaos: Sustaining the Rules-Based Trade Order.”

The forum, which alternates annually between the EUI and the World Trade Institute at the University of Bern, and brings together practitioners, policymakers, and researchers to discuss key challenges in global trade.
This year’s discussions focused around shifts and disruptions to the multilateral trade order, including the United States’ continued retreat from a rules-based system, and explored how countries can and should respond. One such response is issue-specific plurilateral cooperation, which was addressed in a panel featuring Dr Axel Berger, who discussed progress on investment facilitation within the WTO. Dr Tim Vogel contributed to a panel on economic security and critical materials, presenting current work on cooperative trade policy tools. In addition, IDOS guest researcher Prof. Daniel Sakyi shared insights on recent trade trends in Africa.
