01 September marked the beginning of an inspiring journey for the 18 new participants of the 61st PGP. This cohort brings together diverse backgrounds from fields as varied as economics, peace and conflict studies, international relations, environmental science, African studies, and development studies.

In the coming months, they will engage in dynamic debates and academic modules on current issues in development and sustainability cooperation. Recently, participants were challenged to develop possible future scenarios of global trading systems. These imagined futures included the removal of the US from the WTO, a nuclear explosion anniversary, and a new BRICS Trade Organization (BTO), presented in short news-clip format videos.

In the first two weeks, the cohort had the opportunity to engage in activities combining learning, networking and cultural exchange. At a networking event with participants from the Managing Global Governance (MGG) Academy, PGP alumni and IDOS staff, insights on topics such as climate change, green (de)growth, and social inequalities were exchanged. A highlight was the variety of dishes contributed, representing the home countries of MGG participants.
Additionally, they visited the Ahr Valley to explore the Roman Villa in Ahrweiler, hiked through vineyards, and enjoyed the region’s specialties. Such experiences provide an opportunity for the cohort to connect on a personal level beyond the walls of the institute, building trust and camaraderie that enrich their collaborative work.

The participants will conduct empirical research projects in three different groups, reflecting current trends in sustainable development:
- (G)localizing Sustainability Action: The Role of Online and Offline Networks in Indonesia
- Pathways to a Greener, More Productive Firm Landscape in Rwanda’s Built Environment
- The Next Generation of National Development Banks (NDBs): Early Lessons from Ghana and Nigeria
The 61st PGP has officially begun, and with it, a new chapter in advancing knowledge, fostering new friendships and networks, and creating memorable experiences.
