The undeniable overlap between climate and health crises is becoming increasingly clear. Climate change not only poses a direct and serious threat to human health, but also already impacts nearly half the world’s population. Addressing this urgent issue, the IDOS health project hosted a workshop on 27 September 2024 titled „Health, Development, and Climate Change.“

The workshop, attended by 30 participants, including representatives from BMZ, GIZ and KfW Development Bank, featured a compelling keynote by Humboldt Professor Till Baernighausen from the University of Heidelberg. His talk, “Climate Change and Health: A Global Research Agenda,” provided insightful perspectives and spurred discussions on future research and development collaborations. Presentations by Manuela Fritz, Christoph Strupat, Joshua Ntajal, Maximilian Möhrle, Simona Helmsmüller, Edmund Yeboah, and Maheen Zahra further highlighted significant opportunities to advance research and enhance collaborations aimed at improving climate resilience and health outcomes.

Encouraged by the workshop’s positive reception, plans are now underway to further institutionalise the theme of health and climate change. A session proposal focused on this critical issue will be submitted for an upcoming international health conference, and a special issue on the topic is being planned.
