Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR): IDOS with input at parliamentary evening

This parliamentary evening on Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) focussed on the latest outcomes from the recent UN High-Level Meeting on AMR. IDOS researcher, Dr Srinivasa Srigiri, contributed his expertise to this event at the German Parliament on 9 October 2024.

Organised by the Global Health Hub Germany, the event convened members of the German Parliament and stakeholders from academia, policy, the private sector, and civil society. Discussions centred on issues such as disparities in the burden of AMR-related diseases and challenges in accessing new antibiotics, as well as clean water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) facilities.

Srigiri emphasised the crucial role of the environmental sector in combating AMR and advocated for the effective implementation of the One Health approach to achieve sustainable reductions in AMR. During the discussion, it was recognised that Infection Prevention and Control (IPC) is the most effective strategy for curbing AMR. However, ensuring its success, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, requires not only secure access to vaccines and diagnostics but also improvements in WASH infrastructure. A One Health approach, integrating actors across sectors like environment and water, is essential for strengthening efforts to address AMR globally.
