Social protection for climate action and the role of the UN climate funds

The relevance of social protection for inclusive, people-centred climate action has gained increasing attention under the UNFCCC including in the contexts of the work programme on just transition pathways, loss and damage, and the global goal on adaptation.

UN climate funds can play an important role in financing social sectors where private investments are not attractive, especially because of their mandate to support climate mitigation and adaptation in low- and middle-income countries.

On 5 June 2024, the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS), in collaboration with the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and GIZ, hosted a roundtable discussion. The focus was on exploring the potential of the UNFCCC financial mechanisms to leverage social protection for climate action. Participants included representatives from multilateral development banks, UN agencies, research organisations, and national governments. Mariya Aleksandrova, IDOS Senior Researcher, provided input on linkages between climate finance and social protection and presented key findings from an analysis of the Green Climate Fund (GCF).

The event was supported by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) through the project “Climate-Resilient and Nature-Compatible Sustainable Development through Socially Just Transformation” (Klimalog III).
