On 13 April 2026, the new cohort of the Shaping Futures Academy officially started. The programme brings together early and mid-career professionals from Africa (Ghana, Kenya, Senegal, Tunisia and Zambia) and Europe (Spain, Germany, Denmark) working across public institutions, civil society, academia, think tanks and the private sector. Participants of the 2026 cohort bring diverse expertise in areas such as climate policy, governance, social justice, democratic participation and international cooperation, reflecting the Academy’s belief that global challenges require collaborative and cross-sector solutions.

The programme opened with a welcome day, where participants were officially welcomed by representatives from BMZ, IDOS including the Shaping Futures team, the Shaping Futures Network, partners the Ghana Center for Democratic Development (CDD), and Next Economy Lab (NELA). Their contributions highlighted the importance of dialogue, real engagement and long-term partnerships in addressing shared development and sustainability challenges.

The first online introduction module focuses on laying the foundation for the programme. Participants focus on building trust and relationships, exchanging perspectives from their different contexts, and jointly developing a code of conduct to guide collaboration throughout the Academy. The module also introduces a shared exploration of sustainability and its multidimensional nature, anchored in Agenda 2063 and the 2030 Agenda. Through dialogue and reflection, participants begin developing a common understanding while engaging with diverse perspectives and points of debate.

On 19 and 20 May, participants will arrive in Bonn to begin the 8-week in-person phase and create opportunities for exchange with colleagues across the institute. We look forward to welcoming the cohort to Bonn and to the conversations and perspectives they will bring to IDOS.
