The ten-day programme of IF serves to build networks between decision-makers from diplomacy, science, politics, civil society, and business. As 21st edition, the INTERNATIONAL FUTURES (IF) programme took place from 9 to 18 October 2024 in Berlin.
With a focus on “Sustainable Digitalisation”, IF brought together participants of the Managing Global Governance (MGG) Academy with young diplomats as part of the Federal Foreign Office’s International Training for Diplomats (Diplomacy by Networking). As a dialogue format at the interface of diplomacy, sustainable development and digitalisation, it is also linked to the work of the PRODIGEES project, which has been implemented in the MGG network since 2020.
In expert discussions, interactive workshops and simulation games, the group explored the opportunities and risks of artificial intelligence, the influence of social media, big data and digital platforms. Another focus was on the challenges of inclusive digitalisation and the digital agenda for global governance. In this context, the group met with Gesa Bräutigam, Special Envoy for Feminist Foreign Policy and Director for Human Rights and Global Health. Another highlight was the meeting with Niels Annen, Parliamentary State Secretary to the Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development, to discuss the link between sustainable development and diplomacy, and the cooperation agendas between Germany and the countries represented. The programme also included a cultural excursion in Berlin, including a political city tour and visits to the Humboldt Forum and the East Side Gallery.
