Research and policy-making at the climate-development nexus is a complex endeavour that can only succeed if different actors from different regions of the world engage in an approachable, honest and productive dialogue. The Klimalog project at IDOS therefore has been delighted to welcome a delegation of 35 graduates of the “NDC Financing Fellowship”, co-organised by the African Research and Impact Network (ARIN) and the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management (FS), to a joint workshop on “International cooperation with Africa at the climate-development nexus” on February 9. During the workshop, the group had an engaged discussion with researchers from IDOS moderated by Dr Steffen Bauer (Klimalog project co-Lead, IDOS).
The graduates learned about IDOS as an institute for research, policy advice and training from Dr Steffen Bauer. Dr Samantha Ruppel introduced the group to the German-African Leadership Academy, an innovative training and dialogue programme at IDOS that brings together early to mid-career professionals from Germany and its African partner countries.
Dr Benedikt Erforth (Senior Researcher, IDOS) provided a critical perspective on the recently published Africa Strategy of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

Dr Mariya Aleksandrova (Klimalog project co-Lead, IDOS) discussed the emergence of Loss and Damage (L&D) global climate policy, and what is at stake for African states in the multilateral negotiations on L&D funding.
Ms. Leah Aoko (PhD Candidate, ARIN) underlined the fundamental importance of trust and inclusiveness in international cooperation and climate diplomacy.
About the Fellowship:
The “NDC Financing Fellowship” is co-organised by the African Research and Impact Network (ARIN) and the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management (FS). It aims at training young professionals from sub-Saharan Africa in the field of science and politics in dealing with financing mechanisms, climate finance and the implementation of national climate protection and adaptation plans.
