Dr Axel Berger appointed as the new Executive Director of SDSN Germany

On 09 June 2022, the Steering Committee appointed Dr Axel Berger as the new Executive Director of SDSN Germany (interim).

Dr Berger is also the Deputy Director (interim) of the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS). As a political scientist holding a PhD, his research focuses on the interface between international trade, sustainability, and development policy. In addition, he is engaged in the contribution of club governance formats such as the G7 and G20 to multilateral cooperation, especially in the field of international sustainability policy. After working for the research and consulting institute Adelphi, he has held   several positions at DIE since 2007. More specifically, Dr. Berger has coordinated the work on the G20 and G7 as well as the Think20 and Think7 consultative processes at DIE for many years. Furthermore, he teaches at the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn in the field of international political economy.

„We are very pleased that Dr. Berger brings proven expertise in the areas of global trade policy, the role of international financial instruments in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals, and the role of geopolitical challenges for a post-2030 discussion for SDSN Germany and the Science-Policy Exchange by having Dr Berger on board“ explained the chairs of SDSN Germany, Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge and Prof. Dr. Gesine Schwan.

Roundtable discussion on the topic „Leave no one behind? Socio-economic participation as a prerequisite for the transformation of society as a whole towards sustainability“.

On 20 May 2022, RNE and the (SDSN Germany invited experts to discuss the socio-economic prerequisites for the participation of all citizens in the process of sustainable development transformation.

The goal of this event by the German Council for Sustainable Development (RNE) and the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN) Germany was to jointly discuss political options to ensure the success of the transformation against the backdrop of social inequality and social fragmentation and to consider the requirements that an initiative such as “Gemeinschaftswerk Nachhaltigkeit” must fulfil in order to overcome the existing barriers to participation in society as a whole.
