What does the EU expect from the multilateral climate regime in a fragmented, investment-driven international landscape, and how must EU climate diplomacy adapt?

Together with the European Think Tanks Group (ETTG) and its member organisation IDDRI, IDOS researchers Dr Steffen Bauer and Dr Niels Keijzer organised a closed-door roundtable under the Chatham House Rule, which was hosted at the European Climate Foundation’s office in Brussels on 3 September. The discussion brought together experts and representatives from EU member states and the European Commission. Discussions reaffirmed the merits of the Paris Agreement while emphasising the urgency to move from agreeing on international commitments to advancing implementation domestically.

Shrinking aid budgets were a particular concern in regard of the need for more ambitious climate finance and to reflect EU leadership in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF).

A forthcoming publication will share further insights from the discussions and also serves to explore further ETTG cooperation in this area.
