IDOS Researcher Wins Theodore J. Lowi Best Article Award

How do political tipping points in sustainability transitions occur? IDOS researcher Dr Nicholas Goedeking and his co-author Prof. Jonas Meckling explore this question in their research on the political economy of clean energy transitions.

As Nicholas Goedeking explains, the two researchers wanted to better understand how political tipping points come about. This led them to examine how political coalitions can ‘spill over’ from one policy subsystem into another and, in doing so, drive transformational change. Together with his colleague at the University of California, Berkeley, Goedeking received this year’s Theodore J. Lowi Best Article Award from the Public Policy Section of the American Political Science Association (APSA).

“I am deeply honoured and grateful for this recognition,” Goedeking said. The award is given yearly to recognise an article of particular distinction published in Policy Studies Journal. Goedeking and Meckling received the honour for their article “Coalition cascades: The politics of tipping points in clean energy transitions”, which is available open access.

The award was presented at the APSA Annual Meeting in Boston on September 4.
