On June 20 and 21, the Federal government opened its buildings in Berlin to bring its work closer to the public. At the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), IDOS was represented with an information stand.
The strong visitor turnout at the IDOS stand showed how great public interest is in learning what a research institute does that also provides policy advice and offers training opportunities. At the stand, Dr Emmanuel Theodore Asimeng, researcher in sustainable urban planning, and Wendpanga Eric Segueda, press officer, informed visitors about the Institute’s current activities and invited them to contribute their own ideas and visions for shaping sustainable futures.
Visitors with an interest in shaping sustainable futures were able to share their ideas and visions on a pinboard. Given the interdependence in today’s world, visitors wished for stronger crisis prevention, fostering understanding and trust among people, ensuring universal access to healthcare, implementing stricter regulations for AI, improving education, promoting climate-friendly agriculture and providing food for all. Visitors also shared their thoughts on terms that they found difficult to understand as non-academics, and they expressed a desire for science to be more accessible to the general public.
There was also an opportunity to speak with Volker Maier, Director-General for Policy Affairs at the BMZ, about IDOS’s work. He also contributed to the brainstorming on sustainable futures and welcomed the initiative of collecting ideas and perspectives from the public.
