The 61st cohort of the PGP programme completed its training with the presentation of applied and policy-oriented research projects on global development issues.
May marked the culmination of an intensive learning and research journey for the participants of the 61st cohort of the Postgraduate Programme for Sustainability Cooperation (PGP).
On 27 May, the participants presented the results of their applied and policy-oriented research to an interested public audience. Their findings were based on three months of intensive empirical research in Indonesia, Rwanda, Ghana, and Nigeria, complemented by extensive thematic and methodological preparation in the preceding months. The research projects addressed the following topics:
- (G)localizing Sustainability Action: The Role of Online and Offline Networks in Indonesia
- Pathways to a Greener, More Productive Firm Landscape in Rwanda’s Built Environment
- The Next Generation of National Development Banks (NDBs): Early Lessons from Ghana and Nigeria
The presentations attracted considerable interest and sparked lively discussions, highlighting how practice-oriented research can contribute to current academic and policy debates. The participants’ findings provide valuable insights into pressing development challenges and demonstrate the importance of interdisciplinary and practice-oriented approaches to global development issues.
The programme concluded two days later with the ceremonial certificate award ceremony.
In his closing address, Dr Axel Berger, Deputy Director (interim) of IDOS, reflected on increasingly challenging geopolitical developments. Referring to the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, he illustrated how global crises affect international cooperation and shape the future working environment of the programme’s graduates.
In her speech, Dr Simone Christ, Head of the PGP, emphasised the importance of trust, shared experiences, and dialogue as the foundations of international cooperation. She also highlighted the important role of young people who remain committed to international cooperation despite an increasingly challenging environment.
Beyond strengthening participants’ substantive and methodological expertise, the programme fostered their ability to work in diverse teams and international partnerships and to approach complex global challenges from multiple perspectives.
