As part of a study trip to Bonn on 26 March 2026, the group visited IDOS, the UNFCCC secretariat and the United Nations University – Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), reflecting a strong focus on the institutional landscape of international cooperation and sustainability governance.

During their time at IDOS, the students and accompanying CIFE staff members received a comprehensive introduction to the institute’s work and research profile. Dr Wulf Reiners, Head of the Managing Global Governance (MGG) Programme, presented the programme’s approach to capacity development and its role in connecting emerging-economy policymakers with international governance processes. Dr Mariya Aleksandrova, Head of the CLIMDEV project at IDOS, introduced her research on climate change and development, highlighting how IDOS contributes to evidence-based policy advice at the intersection of climate adaptation and international cooperation.

The presentations sparked a vivid and wide-ranging discussion. The students engaged actively with both researchers, raising questions about the practical challenges of translating research findings into policy impact, the role of think tanks in multilateral processes, and the realities of working at the interface of academia and policy advice. The group also explored IDOS’s training programmes, which equip development cooperation professionals with analytical and strategic tools for navigating complex global challenges.

The study visit offered the GEGPA students a close-up view of how a renowned development and sustainability think tank operates, and provided valuable orientation for their future careers in international cooperation and global governance.
