NRW Science Dialogue Day – Workshop to Empower Leadership Programmes

As part of the Science Dialogue Day series, a virtual follow-up workshop took place on 12 June. This session continued the initial exchange on diversity and inclusion strategies among training and development programmes for (emerging) leaders in the fields of international cooperation and sustainability in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Under the theme “Empowering Leadership Programmes: Revisiting Strategies for Diversity and Inclusion”, participants in the workshop reflected on the progress made since the previous meeting. They shared insights on initial implementations and key learnings.

The workshop brought together directors and coordinators of leadership programmes in North Rhine-Westphalia targeting sustainable development and international cooperation. Represented institutions include the Academy of International Affairs, the Charlemange Prize Academy, the Centre for Global Cooperation Research at the University Duisburg-Essen and leadership programmes targeting African countries from the University of Cologne, or from the German Academic Exchange Programme. Additionally, different leadership programmes hosted at the United Nations in Bonn, Deutsche Welle Academy and the formats of IDOS, including the MGG Academy, the Shaping Futures Academy and the Postgraduate Programme for Sustainability Cooperation (PGP) were present.

Especially in today’s insecure and disruptive times—when diversity and inclusion are increasingly under pressure in many parts of the world—leadership programmes must engage even more actively with these topics to contribute to just and equitable societies. Creating spaces where diverse perspectives can thrive and inclusive leadership can be strengthened is more important than ever. By fostering exchange within this network, we aim to support and learn from each other—and to lead by example. Upholding the values of equality, equity, and diversity is essential for promoting sustainable, free, and just societies.

The Managing Global Governance (MGG) Programme invited participants to reflect on the impact of their actions since the last meeting and to explore how inclusive leadership approaches can be further embedded in their work. The workshop was designed to provide an interactive and participatory experience that enhances both the understanding and the implementation of diversity and inclusion in leadership programmes. Participants shared actions taken since the previous session, discussed new challenges requiring support, exchanged insights and best practices, and explored strategies to further advance inclusive leadership. They also reflected on how leadership programmes can strengthen their impact and resilience, particularly amid political shifts and global crises.

The Science Dialogue Day Follow-Up was organised and facilitated by Tâmara Andrade and Johanna Vogel within the Managing Global Governance (MGG) Programme at IDOS with financial support from the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Ministry of Science and Culture of the State of North-Rhine Westphalia.
