The high-level event „The Case for Investing in Health – NOW!“ on 11 February 2025, hosted by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), gathered prominent global health leaders such as WHO Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus, African CDC Director Jean Kaseya, Peter Sands from the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria (GFATM), and BMZ State Secretary Nils Annen. This assembly underscored the critical need to prioritise health investments on the global agenda amid escalating geopolitical tensions.

In a dedicated session titled „Translating Global Insights into National Action,“ Prof. Anna-Katharina Hornidge outlined vital policy recommendations for Germany. These recommendations, drawn from IDOS’s latest Policy Briefs „Health financing in times of multiple crises: analysis and recommendations“ and „Global Health at a Crossroads: Policy Recommendations in Light of the Lancet 2050 Report” (forthcoming), authored jointly with Dr Christoph Strupat, Marco Schäferhoff, PhD, and Prof Martin Siegel, aim to steer the country’s health policy toward effective responses to current global health challenges.

Essential policy recommendations for Germany’s global health leadership include enhanced support for multilateral health organisations and increased bilateral engagements, a strategic focus on combating Non-Communicable Diseases, strengthening domestic health financing mechanisms in partner countries with a focus on health taxes, particularly on tobacco, and promoting innovation in research, development, and manufacturing related to health.
