BIO-JUST Workshop in Lisbon explored environmental justice with hands-on insights from a cork oak forest, bridging research and practice. Partners from Europe and South America discussed key findings and upcoming outcomes, advancing fair ecological solutions.
The BIO-JUST project (BIOdiversity and ecosystem protection driven by Environmental JUSTice) successfully held an in-person workshop from February 12 to 14, 2025, at the Centro de Ecologia Aplicada Prof. Baeta Neves, Instituto Superior de Agronomia – University of Lisbon, Portugal. The event, attended by partners from across Europe and South America, was a central platform for presenting and discussing key findings from case studies in France, Spain, Portugal, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and the Netherlands.
Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on comparative analyses, indicator development, and upcoming project outcomes, including policy briefs, a documentary film, and a special issue, ensuring that the project effectively contributes to environmental justice.
A particular highlight was the afternoon field visit to a nearby cork oak forest, where project partners explored a Nature-based solutions (NbS) project for the provision of watershed ecosystem services. This hands-on experience reinforced the project’s commitment to bridging research and practice.
Launched in April 2023, the BIO-JUST project investigates environmental justice in NbS by addressing distribution, participation, and recognition issues to promote fair ecological solutions. The project seeks to identify and mitigate injustices in the design and implementation of NbS.
The workshop in Lisbon marked a significant milestone in interdisciplinary collaboration, deepened the integration of insights from the case studies, and strengthened partnerships among project members. It provided a crucial space for strategic planning, laying the foundation for successfully progressing the project’s second phase.
