IDOS contributed to this year’s theme „Sharing solutions“ with a Break-out session on possible solutions to support media freedom and protect democracy. At an information stand, IDOS informed visitors about its research, policy advice and training programs, all of which aim to create sustainable solutions.
Organised by IDOS researchers, Dr Anita Breuer and Dr Jasmin Lorch, the session „How to protect democracy in the face of digital challenges“ discussed with media professionals and human rights defenders how international development cooperation can effectively contribute to support media freedom and access to information as well as to protect democracy.
IDOS invited speakers at the session were Zana Idrizi, Information Integrity Specialist at the UNDP’s Global Policy Centre for Governance, Paulo Lara, Co-Director of ARTICLE19 Brazil and South America, and Marites Vitug, one of the Philippines‘ most successful journalists, who has received awards and public recognition for her reports on justice, politics, security and foreign policy. They all emphasised the need to counteract mutually reinforcing global trends of disinformation, toxic polarisation and autocratisation. The guests also exchanged views on these topics with IDOS Research Directorate, Prof Anna-Katharina Hornidge and Dr Axel Berger, on the sidelines of the Global Media Forum.
The „INTERFACES“ project was also actively presented at the IDOS stand. Through research and practical cooperation with farmers, the project contributes to innovative solutions for sustainable land management to achieve food security, adaptation of agriculture and forestry to climate change, as well as nature and environmental protection, and thus ultimately attain to social justice.
In the interaction with visitors at the stand, IDOS provided general information about its work, in particular its offers in policy advice and the training programmes at IDOS: Postgraduate Programme, Managing Global Governance Academy and Shaping Futures Academy.
This year’s Global Media Forum already opened on Sunday with a reception at the Villa Hammerschmidt in Bonn. At this event, IDOS Director Prof. Anna-Katharina Hornidge exchanged views with Deutsche Welle Director Peter Limbourg and Dr. Eckart von Hirschhausen, founder of the foundation Gesunde Erde. Gesunde Menschen (Healthy Earth. Healthy people).
