Since mid-September 2023, the BMZ African-German Leadership Academy is known as Shaping Futures – African-European Network on Development and Sustainability, which incorporates the two elements: Shaping Futures Academy and Shaping Futures Network.

Shaping Futures is a dialogue and training programme targeted at early to mid-career professionals from participating African (Côte d’Ivoire, Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Morocco, Senegal, Tunisia, Togo and Zambia) and European (EU, EEA and UK) countries. The Shaping Futures Academy aims to empower future leaders on both continents by bringing together like- minded peers to reflect on their roles in their respective communities and institutions and develop strategies on how they can induce or support change processes for a transformation to sustainability in the present and future contexts.
With this rebrand, we continue and strengthen core elements established over the last three years: the possibilities for exchange within the academy programme, the Alumni network, as well as the diversity of participants. The Shaping Futures Academy welcomes participants from a various sectors (civil society, academia and think tanks, public administration, business and media) to encourage transdisciplinarity and promote networking and knowledge exchange.
We also include some new elements to create even greater opportunities for participants. Alongside our nine African partner countries, participation in the Shaping Futures Academy 2024 will be open to participants from across Europe, expanding beyond Germany. Furthermore, the format becomes more modular, running from April to November, including extended online phases. We will also see the programme implemented as in-person encounters in Bonn/Germany and Accra/ Ghana.
The Shaping Futures Academy is hosted by the German Institute of Development and Sustainability (IDOS) and funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ). The programme is conducted in English.
