Under the title „Spillover effects, sustainable supply chains and SDG 9“, SDSN Germany is planning a side event at the HLPF (High Level Political Forum) 2023 in New York.
The event is aimed to be implemented in partnership with the Permanent Mission of Ethiopia to the United Nations (UN), UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization), SDSN United Kingdom and SDSN Germany member VENRO (Association of German Development and Humanitarian Organisations).
The annual HLPF, which is attended by all UN member states and numerous high-ranking government representatives from around the world, is considered the decisive UN body for coordinating global sustainability policy. The HLPF is also responsible for reviewing the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). It is therefore the key preparatory conference for the SDG Summit of Heads of State and Government in September 2023, where a mid-term review of the implementation of this global vision will take place.
The planned event of SDSN Germany will focus on the question of how negative spillover effects, understood as undesirable external economic, social, environmental and security spillover effects from industrialised countries to other countries, can be reduced and what opportunity sustainable supply chains offer in this context. This will be accompanied by an intensive review of SDG 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure) and a reflection on necessary regulatory mechanisms and other approaches to the design of value chains that reduce negative international spillover effects of any nature.
