Prof. Dr Anna-Katharina Hornidge, Director of IDOS, and Niels Annen, Parliamentary State Secretary to the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), discussed with experts from the MENA countries the challenges and opportunities for Germany’s future cooperation with countries in the region in times of war in Ukraine and the related energy shortages, as well as climate change and an autocratisation trend. Discussion topics included the importance of feminist development policy as well as the promotion of renewable energy sources and of social protection systems in the MENA region.
The IDOS project „Stability and Development in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA)“, which co-organised the event, is researching in particular the role of MENA states in the global economy and the significance of social contracts for stabilisation and sustainable development in the region. Based on this, the team is also active in policy advice and contributes to the development of the BMZ’s new MENA regional strategy.
