Advisory Board meeting: African-German Leadership Academy

The international Advisory Board of the African-German Leadership Academy discussed the next edition of the Academy in a virtual meeting on 26 January 2022.

The BMZ African-German Leadership Academy is an innovative training and dialogue programme that brings together early to mid-career professionals from Germany and its African partner countries.

Lively exchange during the first meeting

The international Advisory Board jointly reflected on the Academy 2021. The alumna Soumaya Zaddem from Tunisia provided a recap of her experiences. Discussion with the Board evolved around capacity development programmes and the African-German Leadership Academy’s curriculum. Members of the Board drew on their experiences and expertise, for example by reporting best-practice examples that the Academy can benefit from, but also by asking more details about the selection process of participants, impact measurement as well as the networking elements of the Academy. Their shared insights and engagements were highly appreciated by the team of the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ).

The Advisory Board

The Advisory Board consist of 15 members, from both African and German partner organisations, who are operating transnationally and hold recognised expertise in capacity development / training, research, and policy advice. Partners include, inter alia, the African Union, the SDG Center for Africa, the African Centre for Economic Transformation, Atlas4development, the African Leadership Institute, the DAAD and the Africa programmes of German political foundations. The annual meetings serve as a dialogue space and an exchange platform with DIE and BMZ. In this space, the Board advises on the cooperation and curriculum development and provides feedback on the past Academy and further planning. The reviews and comments contribute to keeping the programme relevant to African partners and the DIE’s mandate.
