Strategic partnership with the German Marine Research Alliance

Logo: DAM

One of the goals the German Marine Research Alliance (DAM) follows is to make marine research more interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary. In that way, action-oriented marine science research and policy advice can be fostered when dealing with global challenges in the interplay of ecological, socio-economic, and political change processes.

The alliance was looking for new partners that can also add a social science perspective. The German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) is pleased to contribute with its social and cultural science expertise on the ocean as a global negotiating surface, climate regulator, biodiversity hub and contested raw material supplier to German marine sciences in dealing with global challenges. Specifically, DIE is involved in DAM-enabled research on marine biodiversity and international biodiversity policy. Further collaborations are envisaged in relation to sustainable estuaries and the anchoring of marine knowledge in knowledge systems (‚Ocean Literacy‘). In addition to DIE, DAM also chose the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) in Potsdam as a second strategic partner.

In this video, the director of DIE gives an overview of the research on ocean governance the institute conducts:
