Discussion series: “Turned to levers? Foreign Policies for the Sustainable Development Goals”
Over 50 representatives from government, business, academia, civil society, as well as a team from the “Citizens’ Council” took part in a tripartite series of events on international responsibility and cooperation as guidelines for German and European policies for sustainability. The discussion series was hosted in cooperation with the German Institute for International and Security Affairs, the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) and SDSN Germany. Prof. Dr. Anna-Katharina Hornidge (Director of DIE / Co-Chair SDSN Germany) opened the discussion series, which covered foreign trade policy, international cooperation and foreign policy. The discussions focused on trade policy, foreign trade promotion and a “smart mix” of legal requirements for sustainable supply chains, including sanctions, and accompanying voluntary initiatives. A further focus was on a paradigm shift in international cooperation, namely towards reciprocal transformation partnerships with countries of all income groups and better cross-departmental cooperation in the field of foreign policy.

Advisory Council Dialogue: Finance as a Lever for Sustainable Development
On 17 May 2021, the Science Platform Sustainability 2030 and SDSN Germany hosted the “Advisory Council Dialogue 2021” and invited the various scientific advisory councils to share their perspective on finance as a transformational lever for sustainable development. The debate identified priorities for action as well as the shortcomings of existing concepts and strategies. The outcomes of the Advisory Council Dialogue will serve to help implement the sustainable finance strategy of the Federal Government in the upcoming legislative period. Finance is gaining importance across all policy fields when it comes to post-COVID-19 recovery and shaping a sustainable future. When discussing German and European recovery programmes participants emphasised the need to relate programme issues such as climate policy, digitisation and social cohesion.
