In the most recent call of the Philipp Schwartz Initiative, the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) has been given the opportunity to award one of 26 Philipp Schwartz Fellowships. The success rate in this round was around 28.6 %. Starting probably in autumn, these funds will enable the DIE to host a scholar at risk for 24 months. This was the first round of awards to which DIE applied. The success rate in this round was around 28.6 %.
The Philipp Schwartz Initiative was launched by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation together with the German Federal Foreign Office. It enables universities, universities of applied science, and independent research institutions to grant researchers at risk fellowships for research stays in Germany. The initiative has been made possible through generous support from the Federal Foreign Office, the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen und Halbach Foundation, the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation, the Fritz Thyssen Foundation, the Gerda Henkel Foundation, the Klaus Tschira Foundation, the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the Stifterverband, and the Stiftung Mercator.
Up to 50 fellowships are awarded every year. Successful applications are selected not only by the quality of the integration in the respective research institution, the scientific possibilities and the qualifications of the researcher, but also by the prospects for a successful start of career in Germany.
