On 9 March 2020, the German Bundestag’s sub-committee on “Civilian Crisis Prevention, Conflict Management and Comprehensive Approach” held a public meeting on “Peace mediation: How can Germany strengthen its capacities?”. Julian Bergmann from the German Development Institute / Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE) participated as an invited expert speaker in this debate.
In his statement, he argued for strengthening the European dimension of Germany’s engagement in peace mediation and for fostering the coherence between mediation initiatives by the member states and EU institutions. In the ensuing debate, the invited experts and the Members of the German Bundestag discussed ways to improve the effectiveness of German peace mediation efforts and how to promote parliamentarians’ active support for mediation processes.
